A Family Business
Walsh Brothers is a family run business and one of the longest established groundworks contractors in Yorkshire, founded in 1973.
Founded by Brothers William (Billy) & Seamus Walsh. Walsh Brothers original started out life as plant hire company, operating out of a rented shed in Scholes, Cleckheaton. Typically providing dozers and excavators to local contractors working on some of the new motorways. Walsh Brothers were one of the first companies in the country to purchase a “rubber duct†to service the needs of their clients.
All change at Walsh Brothers, as Billy decided to return “home†to Ireland along with his young family and half the plant, and set up business on the West Coast of Ireland. However the youngest Walsh Brother, Tommy, was ready to step in and fill the void.
During the 1980’s Walsh Brothers expanded into the sub-contracting role undertaking projects for larger national builders such as Higgs & Hill and Budge. Working predominately on new industrial parks. The plant hire department remained active and secured a contract with Leeds City Council, which it still holds today!
Having gained experience, knowledge and a reputation Walsh Brothers successfully undertook numerous contracts direct from Local authorities, such as Wakefield and Rotherham, as main contractors. This was in addition to sub-contracting to Blue chip organisations carrying out projects such as the Centretainment complex in Sheffield and Warner Village in Leeds. Walsh Brothers also relocated its office to Dewsbury.
All change again! This decade saw the introduction of two of Seamus’ boys into the company and the retirement of Tommy. Chris having graduated from university and then spending 3 years in London as an engineer, was the first to join. Michael joined soon after having worked for several other groundwork contractors’ around the region, in various roles. In 2006 it was decided to change the company from a partnership into a limited company with Michael and Chris both appointed as directors.
Walsh Brothers thought the time was right to purchase their own offices and a five acre site, in South Milford, which wasn’t easy in the middle of a recession. Walsh Brothers continue to grow and who knows what the future holds, but as Seamus has seven grandchildren and only one is a boy lets hope more women start joining the industry!
The quality of the work by our people is as important to us as it is to our clients, as is their welfare.
We invest into their training and foster a strong ethos of safety first. All our operatives have CPCS/CSCS qualifications, as a minimum, those responsible for site management have completed IOSH affiliated programmes managing and directing on site.
Health and Safety
Walsh Brothers integrate health and safety into the management of projects and encourage everyone involved to work together.
Prior to commencing a project all activities have a detailed risk assessment and method statement compiled outlining the complete scope of works identifying potential hazards and how to minimise them. Our health and safety procedures compliment the Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1974 and Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2007.
Our experience over the decades have seen us take on a variety of groundworks projects including residential, educational, retail and industrial for both the private and public sectors.
Our plant hire department can accommodate most requests thanks to our wide selection of machinery. Thanks to the experience of our CPCS qualified operatives we have enjoyed long continuous relationships with the public and private sector, on of which is in excess of 20 years!
